Max Verstappen is set to make a return to Netflix’s popular Drive to Survive series next year, according to his manager Raymond Vermeulen. While the F1 series has been a huge hit all over the world, Verstappen has not been a huge fan.

Verstappen admitted that he didn’t like some of the dramatization that was made to try and spice up some of the rivalries in the sport. Last year saw Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton embroiled in a heated battle on the track with both Mercedes and Red Bull making pointed shots at one another on repeated occasions.

The Drive to Survive series was hotly anticipated for more behind-the-scene footage of Verstappen and Hamilton’s battle but the former’s no-show left some disappointed. The Dutchman explained that he felt certain aspects were “very wrong” and even indicated he would never go back on the show, saying: “My opinion is not going to change.”

However, Vermeulen has now confirmed that Verstappen will be in next year’s Drive to Survive series so long as certain agreements are kept. “This year Max wants to participate in the series, but logically we want to know what the storyline will look like, what the story will be and what Max’s contribution will be,” he told RacingNews365.

“I think those are very valid questions. In principle, not just about Max, but also about the other F1 drivers. In conversation with the Formula 1 organization, this has been discussed and it has been decided that everyone will have more say and that is a good thing in my opinion.

“We have had good conversations about this with the FOM and Netflix and I expect a nice contribution from Verstappen in the next season of the series.” Vermeulen also opened up on why Verstappen was not a fan of the Netflix series heading into last year.

“The Netflix series has obviously been instrumental in growing Formula 1’s popularity in the US market, but the fact is that they run what they run and you can’t really control how they portray you,” he added. “Of course, I understand that drama and sensation makes for wonderful television, but I think it is also important that you know how you are portrayed.”

Verstappen has not been alone in criticising the Drive to Survive series with other drivers also not happy at certain aspects. AlphaTauri star Pierre Gasly became the latest to speak out against the show earlier this year when he declared some scenes are “kind of made up”.

“I haven’t seen the whole series, so I haven’t seen like [more than] pretty much the first two episodes,” Gasly said. “You can clearly see that some scenes are kind of made up for the show. It’s difficult to speak for the drivers, I’m not in their position. I don’t know how they [Netflix] get on with other guys.

“I think on our side with Yuki [Tsunoda], which is what I can compare, it was kind of normal. But obviously as a driver, you don’t want to be portrayed differently than the person you are in reality. I think that’s the main thing that we ask for.”
