Nyck de Vries sensationally claimed he trained with tennis icon Novak Djokovic following the Dutchman’s impressive Formula 1 debut. In Alexander Albon’s absence due to appendicitis, De Vries finished ninth for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull star Max Verstappen recovered from a five-place grid penalty at Monza to frustrate the Tifosi and claim his 11th win of the 2022 season. The reigning world champion had been leading the race after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – who secured pole position on Saturday – made a second pitstop to change onto a set of soft tyres.
Meanwhile, Williams are languishing at the bottom of the standings with just six points to their name. De Vries competed in his first F1 race and secured two points for his impressive P9 finish.
As a result, De Vries is now a man in demand with rumours swirling he could be taken on by AlphaTauri for 2023. He revealed his shoulders were in pain following his spectacular drive at Monza, suggesting he ‘got to train alongside Novak Djokovic’.

“I walked out of the gym where I was lucky enough to train with Novak Djokovic,” De Vries, whose shoulders were ‘completely dead’, told AutoHebdo. “I had to work on my neck and stuff, but it was really good.
“My shoulders are better, fortunately they quickly got normal after the race. But they were definitely very tired.
“I’m not going to complain, I lived on a little cloud on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Those were great times. Still, I quickly refocused because I have to be ready for what’s to come.

“It was an amazing experience, which I enjoyed. I got so much support… And at the same time, life goes on!”
His outing in Italy clearly took a toll on De Vries, as the 2021 Formula-E world champion struggled to get out of the car following the result. De Vries is desperately hoping to secure a seat for next season – and his performance in Italy suggests he is ready to compete in F1.
The 22-race F1 2022 campaign continues with the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit on October 2.
