Nicholas Latifi has hit out at Nyck de Vries’ impressive drive at the Italian Grand Prix and claimed he achieved what he was ‘supposed to’. De Vries stopped in to replace Alex Albon in Monza after the Thai-Brit withdrew with appendicitis.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen recovered from a five-place grid penalty to frustrate the Tiff’s and claim his 11th win of the 2022 season. The reigning world champion had been leading the race after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – who secured pole position on Saturday – made a second pitstop to change onto a set of soft tyres.

Verstappen was running a one-stop strategy on medium tyres and was able to hold the lead until the end. The result also saw the Red Bull team move 139 points clear of Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship.

Meanwhile, Williams are languishing at the bottom of the standings with just six points to their name. De Vries competed in his first F1 race this season and secured two points for his P9 finish.

However, teammate Latifi has refuted the idea that it was a particularly impressive drive from the Dutchman – even though the Canadian himself finished 15th. Only four dropouts and Haas driver Kevin Magnussen performed worse than Latifi at the Italian Grand Prix.

Latifi was chiefly frustrated with the performance of his car while also dismissing de Vries’ result, suggesting the car can keep positions easily. He said: “The car is only slow in the corners, but we were fast on the straights. That was because we had no downforce.”

The 27-year-old believes he lost all his time in the corners and struggled to compete with the cars in front. He is not surprised that De Vries was able to find success, who qualified 13th but was able to climb up the grid thanks to penalties for other drivers.

“That’s where the car was supposed to finish,” Latifi said of De Vries’ finish. “I think if we’d been at the front, we could have driven there too.

“But our car is not really suitable for racing, it’s more: stay where you drive.”

The 22-race F1 2022 campaign continues with the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit on October 2.
