Alpine could be forced to deal with plenty of inter-team fireworks next year if they decide to sign Pierre Gasly as a replacement for the outgoing Fernando Alonso, according to ex-F1 driver Karun Chandhok. Gasly is tied down to AlphaTauri until the end of 2023 but has been heavily linked with a potential move to Alpine, who have reportedly been exploring the possibility of snapping him up between now and the start of next year.

It remains to be seen whether Gasly moving to Alpine would disrupt the internal chemistry at the team, though, with the 26-year-old having insisted that he does not get along with Esteban Ocon on a number of previous occasions. Chandhok believes that Alpine would need to handle the inevitable tensions that would arise if they decide to pair up the two French drivers next year, but has also urged them both to put their differences aside in order to stand the best chance of succeeding as a duo.

“I think there will, 100 per cent, be fireworks,” Chandhok exclusively told Express Sport when quizzed on the possibility of Gasly joining Alpine ahead of next season.

“It seems to be an issue that started back in their karting days and it’s quite a deeply ingrained issue they had with each other. I think it goes both ways, I don’t know the full ins and outs of it but it’s quite clear there’s no love lost.

“It’ll take a pretty strong bit of management from Alpine to keep a lid on that. Ultimately as a team they’ve got to sign the driver they think will bring them the most points and the best results. If that’s Gasly then they’ve just got to suck it up and somehow make sure it doesn’t boil over.

“They’ve got to be professional about it, they’ve got to be grown up about it. If you had an issue when you were 14 years old in karting, that’s fine, but now you’re in Formula One and you’ve got to be grown-ups about it.”

Chandhok, meanwhile, was speaking to Express Sport after hosting the BonusFinder World Gas Pumping Championships in London and presenting the winner with a title belt, prize money and a replenished tank of petrol.

“It was one of the most amusing and left-field days I’ve had, if I’m honest,” said Chandhok. “It was just a really fun day for people to come out and win a bit of prize money.

“The people participating got well into it. It’s a bit of a random thing to do on a Wednesday but they all got really competitive and quite serious!”
