Lewis Hamilton has revealed he keeps in touch with new FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem despite the Mercedes star’s fight with the FIA over their jewellery ban. Hamilton also said he is “quite happy” with the FIA as he praised Ben Sulayem.
His comments come after the seven-time champion was asked what his relationship is like with the new FIA head ahead of the Italian Grand Prix. Hamilton said: “Well, I mean, it’s not an easy role for anyone, I think it takes time to get into a role and, and build all the relationships, and again, also to implement change.
“But I think the most important thing for right now is the drivers. We’re trying to build that connection with the drivers, all of us, the GPDA, we’re all united, and we want to help make the racing better. We want to help the FIA, and Mohammed has been really open with that. So yep, we’re just going to continue to work on that communication. I’m in touch with him quite a lot.
“We actually speak quite a bit. And, and he’s very, very driven for… he’s competitive. He used to race himself, so he has a competitor sort of mindset. And he’s also very keen on diversity, and really pushing for future change. So he wants to collaborate with us all on that. So I’m quite happy with it.”

The FIA cracked down on drivers wearing jewellery at the start of the season. Hamilton was one of the most affected drivers on the grid as he wears a stud earring behind the wheel.
The Mercedes star pushed back against the changes, claiming he had piercings where he couldn’t explain where it was. This led the FIA to grant Hamilton an exemption against the ban until the British Grand Prix.
However, the seven-time champion previously admitted to intentionally “f***ing” with the FIA over the issue.

He was seen wearing several watches in the press conference ahead of the Miami Grand Prix back in May. He told Vanity Fair: “I was just f***ing with it. I don’t have any other piercings anywhere.
“But I love that there’s this thinking: S***, has he got his balls pierced? Since I was a kid – rules. I’ve never loved being told what to do.” Since the summer, Hamilton appears to have developed a close relationship with Ben Sulayem.
The Briton was spotted shaking his hand at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and was engaged in conversation at Silverstone. Ben Sulayem then appeared to hug Hamilton after a dismal qualifying session at the Belgian Grand Prix.
