Damon Hill has offered Lewis Hamilton hope in his battle against Max Verstappen, despite the Brit suffering a difficult end to the Dutch Grand Prix. The 37-year-old finished fourth in Holland despite looking to claim his first win of the season, and Hill believes he will have another chance at victory.

Hamilton ripped into the Mercedes team in an expletive-ridden radio message after losing the lead in the race to Verstappen. As the Dutchman pitted for soft tyres while the safety car had been deployed, George Russell was behind Hamilton and Verstappen had to overtake both to claim the race win.

However Mercedes decided to pit Russell in the final furlong and Verstappen on his new tyres was moved into second and then was able to overtake Hamilton and seal victory in his homeland. Hamilton blasted his team on the radio. “That was the biggest f*** up,” Hamilton shouted before he was then overtaken by his team-mate. “I can’t believe you guys **** **** me, can’t tell you how **** I am,” Hamilton said.

And Hill, the 1996 F1 world champion, believes that despite Mercedes’ “tough” transition over the past year, Hamilton will have another opportunity to claim a race win by the end of the season.

“It’s a bit of a tough thing to go from being the most dominant team almost ever in Formula 1 to suddenly not winning a race the following season,” Hill told Sky Sports News. “So that’s almost inconceivable. But the pace is coming, they were more competitive here at Stansport than a few other races, certainly at Spa.

“There may be opportunities later in the season, I’m sure there will be an opportunity and Lewis’ pace is still there, both of their paces George and Lewis, I think are performing brilliantly as ever and I think Ferrari tend to fade, so we will see what happens.”

Hamilton claimed the Silver Arrows could have won the race if not for the drama at the end. “I think we did [do enough to win] yeah but given the circumstances we were just challenged with lots of things with the VSCs and safety cars,” Hamilton said. “The strategy and the car had been so good up until that point.

“The pit stops were fantastic, the best I think we have had all year, it was geeing me up. I was thinking the guys are really on it today. I was really hopeful we were going to get a one-two together as a team.

“Especially after not a great year, an up and down year, we’ve not had a win since Brazil. So we are fighting for it in our grasp but of course the safety car didn’t really help and I was just on the edge of breaking point with emotions.”
