Lewis Hamilton driving an uncompetitive car this year has been “embarrassing”, according to former F1 star Jean Alesi. Hamilton is without a win in the 2022 season with Mercedes beginning the year far behind rivals Red Bull and Ferrari.

They’ve had vast improvements in recent months and the summer break is another opportunity to close the gap. But it’s been a new challenge for Hamilton at Mercedes, something he hasn’t experienced in all his time in F1.

The British driving superstar has won an F1 race in every season of his career at this stage of the campaign with his previous longest wait coming in 2011 when he won in his 10th race of the year. While Mercedes have shown improvements in recent races, Hamilton is still without a win through 13 Grands Prix.

There is some optimism heading into the final nine races that it will come sooner rather than later. But Alesi, who spent 13 years racing in F1, has taken aim at Mercedes for not giving the iconic British driver a car capable of challenging at the front yet.

“It’s easy for me to say but everybody was shocked by [their start.],” Alesi told Give Me Sport. “When they presented the car in Bahrain everybody said ‘oh my God, they have made something very special and they’re going to be untouchable.’

“But lap after lap they found out the car was nowhere. And to see Lewis Hamilton driving a car like that was sometimes embarrassing because Lewis is a seven-time world champion.

“But to see his capacity to still improve the car, that was impressive.

“In Hungary, it was fantastic to see George on pole position and Lewis fighting towards the front.”

Hamilton is adament that he will maintain his record of standing atop the podium at least in every season he’s raced in F1. He said earlier this month: “We’re definitely going to get a win this year.

“That’s something I couldn’t have told you before the race. So it feels great.”
