Valtteri Bottas has reiterated how happy he is at having split from Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes to join Alfa Romeo by insisting 2022 is “probably the most enjoyable” season of his F1 career. The comments come a matter of months after the Finn declared he was “happier” now he isn’t racing alongside the “dominant” Hamilton with the Silver Arrows.

Bottas saw his five-year stint with Mercedes come to an end following the conclusion of the 2021 F1 World Championship and a fresh challenge with Alfa Romeo begin. During his time with the Silver Arrows, the 32-year-old claimed 10 Grand Prix victories and twice finished as runner-up to team-mate Hamilton in the drivers’ championship.

Having taken a step down to join Alfa Romeo, these days Bottas’ objectives within the sport have shifted significantly and seen him embroiled in action-packed battles with various other teams in the middle of the pack. Despite no longer challenging with Hamilton at the pinnacle of the sport, Bottas has reiterated that he feels he is better off away from the Brit. In his view, he has never been happier within F1.

“This season is probably the most enjoyable so far,” Bottas told Motorsport.com. “OK, maybe you don’t always remember things, but it really feels like I’m enjoying F1 more than ever.

“When it gets to the racing, it’s a lot of good fun, especially like in the midfield and how different it is strategy-wise in the races. It’s more like one decision can jump you many places. It’s a different game.

“In the past at Mercedes, normally it used to be only one team that we battled against, so then it’s just focused on those two cars. But now I can have six cars around that we need to be aware of. So that’s nice.”

The remarks arrive a few months after Bottas stated something similar regarding his new-found enjoyment of F1. Speaking back in April, the Alfa Romeo driver confessed he was feeling “happier” now he wasn’t competing alongside the “dominant” Hamilton, with the ex-Mercedes man also divulging that he now felt he had more of a voice within his team.

“I just feel a bit happier in life overall,” Bottas told The Race. “I really feel a big part of the team. And it’s been really nice to have proper authority on things. If I ask for something, it happens – and everyone really listens.

“I’m not just a driver, but also an important team member. It was always quite difficult in the past to really step up. And I think Lewis also in a team is quite a dominant person in a way. It was pretty clear that I couldn’t have the same role there as what I have here.”
