Mercedes ace George Russell has congratulated Alex Albon for earning a new Formula One deal and reacted after the Williams driver referenced Oscar Piastri’s Alpine contract debacle in his announcement. On Tuesday night, Alpine announced that Australian Piastri had signed a contract for the 2023 season – only for the 21-year-old to deny that this was the case soon after.
And Williams star Albon amusingly mocked the situation when announcing that his own contract had been extended into next season. The 26-year-old has confirmed his seat at Williams for the 2023 campaign.
“I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year,” Albon cheekily wrote on Twitter.
“This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year.”

Mercedes and former Williams man Russell responded by laughing at the reference to Piastri and Alpine. The 24-year-old replied to Albon’s tweet with two laughing emojis and the words: “Love it!!”
It comes after there was mass confusion in F1 on Tuesday night when Alpine announced that youngster Piastri would drive for them next season. “After four years as part of the Renault and Alpine family, Reserve Driver Oscar Piastri is promoted to a race seat alongside Esteban Ocon starting from 2023,” an Alpine statement posted to Twitter read.
But Piastri shut down that statement by insisting that he had not signed a contract to drive for the team. The 21-year-old wrote: “I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year.
“This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.”

Albon’s announcement was clearly well-humoured. Piastri liked the tweet within five minutes of it being published.
Albon said in a Williams statement: “It’s really exciting to be staying with Williams Racing for 2023. and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve as a team in the remainder of this season and next year.
“The team is pushing hard to progress, and I am really motivated to continue this journey and further develop our learnings together.”
Thai-British driver Albon has secured three points for Williams this season and sits 19th in the F1 world drivers’ championship leaderboard. It is unclear where Piastri’s future lies. He has been linked with a switch to McLaren ahead of the 2023 season as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo.
